Budget Gem: Reviewing the Pentax-M 50mm Prime Lens

As a designer, I rely heavily on my camera to capture unique product images for clients. Generic stock photos just won’t do. Any creative can take decent pictures, but high-quality gear brings designs to the next level.
Looking for that quality without breaking the bank, I opted for a Pentax SLR to take advantage of its compatibility with classic lenses. I then traded out the kit lens for an affordable SMC Pentax-M 50mm F1.7 prime lens I found on eBay for a mere $69!
First Impressions
This tiny lens packs a powerful punch! I’m blown away by the sharp images it produces, especially when I shoot at f/4 or f/5.6. The bokeh (background blur) easily outshines kit lenses. Even in dimly lit scenarios, a wide aperture and slightly higher ISO setting have let me work without a flash. While this isn’t an exhaustive review, my initial thoughts are incredibly positive.
Setup Notes
Attaching the lens is easy, except for two things (Note: these steps are K-X specific; other cameras might differ):
- Focal Length Input: My camera prompted me to “Input Focal Length” – set this to 50mm.
- Aperture Ring Enable: You must enable the aperture ring in your camera’s settings for the lens to work, since it lacks electronic contacts.
I’ll make a detailed setup tutorial soon!
Should You Get One?
If you want a great lens on a tight budget, classic glass is the answer. Do your own research, but based on my experience, this lens punches above its price tag.
